BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Hoosiers Jason Spriggs and Jordan Howard worked out in front of NFL Scouts Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Spriggs, a left tackle at Indiana, put in one of the more impressive individual performances on the day.
He was the quickest among players at his position with a 4.94 40-yard dash time and led the way with a broad jump of 9-foot-7, the fourth longest for an offensive lineman during the last 10 years at the annual combine.
He backed those numbers up with a vertical jump of 31.5'' (3rd among linemen) and a bench press of 31 repetitions at 225 pounds (ranking 4th).
Spriggs results at the Combine will no doubt help his draft stock after being named first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America last season. Since competing at last month's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., Spriggs' name has made its way further and further up national draft boards, though he said he doesn't pay much attention to them.
He's fine with waiting until the NFL Draft itself, which will be held April 28-30 in Chicago.
"I'm just trying to continue to be positive about it and keep my head down and keep working," Spriggs told reporters earlier this week. "I just want to further let people recognize my athleticism and kind of how I can move. That is something I can show here."
While Spriggs' recent work has been more public, Howard's has come in private.
The running back missed the last two games of Indiana's season after having a knee scope in late November and has since been on the road to recovery. He worked out without limitation in the Combine's positional drills but passed on the 40-yard dash for now and will run it during his IU Pro Day April 1.
Howard recorded a broad jump of 10-foot-2 (7th among running backs), a vertical jump of 34'' (tied for 11th among running backs) and 16 bench press repetitions.
"I'm enjoying the process," Howard told reporters. "I felt like I had matured enough to play in the NFL."
Howard gave a nod to Indiana running backs coach Deland McCullough for preparing him to play in the NFL. McCullough spent three years in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles before eventually getting into coaching.
"Coach McCullough prepared us a lot," Howard said. "He had us draw plays up on the board and talk through plays so we'd know how to get through interviews and tell teams about some of our plays."
Quarterback Nate Sudfeld is scheduled to take the field Saturday. Defensive lineman Darius Latham won't work out until Sunday.
