BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second week in a row, an Indiana Softball pitcher has been tabbed as Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week as Tara Trainer earned the accolade on Monday afternoon.
Trainer, a native of Lebanon, Ohio, tossed 15.2 innings in the Texas A&M Invitational and earned a 2-1 record in four appearances. During the weekend, she surrendered just four hits with 24 strikeouts on the way to a 1.79 ERA.
Against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Saturday, Trainer tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and struck out nine Islanders while allowing just one hit in the victory.
In her second win of the weekend, Trainer registered 10 strikeouts in 4.0 innings to lead the Hoosiers past UTEP on Sunday morning. Against the Miners, Trainer allowed just a single hit and one run in the relief effort. Her 10 strikeouts matched her career high set against Georgia State on Feb. 13.
Additionally, in a relief appearance against No. 16 Texas A&M on Saturday, Trainer pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.
For the season, Trainer sits at second in the conference with an opposing batting average of just .184. In addition, she's fifth in the Big Ten with 53 strikeouts on the year.
Fellow freshman pitcher Josie Wood earned the accolade last week after tossing 20.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs while picking up 16 strikeouts at the Panther Invitational.
