BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head women's basketball coach Teri Moren was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the conference coaches and media, as All-Big Ten teams and yearly awards were announced by the conference office on Monday. Tyra Buss was named First Team All-Big Ten (coaches and media) as Amanda Cahill earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors by the media vote and Honorable Mention laurels from the Big Ten coaches.
Moren becomes the second Indiana head coach to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year, the first being Maryalyce Jeremiah in 1983. Moren has led the 2015-16 Hoosiers to 20 wins, the most regular season victories in program history, and a fourth place finish in the Big Ten standings with a 12-6 record in conference play. IU's fourth place finish was the school's best since tying for third overall in 1997-98, which was also the only other time in program history that the Hoosiers earned a No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Seymour, Ind., native earns her first career conference Coach of the Year award at the Division I level. Moren was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2003 as head coach at the University of Indianapolis (Division II).
Buss becomes the first Indiana player since 2006 (Cyndi Valentin) to earn First Team All-Big Ten accolades. She ended the regular season leading the Hoosiers in scoring with 19.0 ppg (10th in B1G), assists with 4.4 apg (8th), steals with 2.2 spg (T-2nd) and free throw percentage at 77.0 percent (13th). She also added 5.1 rebounds per game from the point guard position.
Buss has had three double-doubles so far this year and is one of only two players (Rachel Banham, Minnesota) in the Big Ten to end the regular season ranked in the conference's top 10 in scoring, assists and steals in 2015-16.
The Mt. Carmel, Ill., native scored in double figures in every contest this season as the sophomore has scored 571 points on the year, ranking her sixth in school history for most points scored in a single season. Her 187 free throws made tie for the most in a single season from the charity stripe by an IU player and ties her for 10th in Big Ten history for a single year. In games played through Feb. 28, she ranks third in the country in free throws made.
In her first two seasons so far at Indiana, Buss set the school record for most points scored in freshman and sophomore seasons combined with 933 career points heading into postseason play.
Cahill achieved 10 double-doubles during regular season play, the program's most for a player in a single year since 2008-09. The Clyde, Ohio, native enters the postseason averaging 14.6 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per games while shooting 50 percent from the field and team-leading 40.7 percent from beyond the arc.
In Big Ten games only, Cahill averaged 15.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest, making her one of only three players in the conference to average those numbers in league play.
Cahill finished the regular season with 255 rebounds on the year, ranking her ninth in program history for most rebounds in a single season. That total is the most rebounds in a single year at Indiana since 2007-08.
Lyndsay Leikem was recognized as Indiana's sportsmanship honoree. Leikem appeared in all 30 games during the regular season and will graduate in May after she completes her third academic year in Bloomington with degrees in criminal justice and psychology.
Indiana is the four seed in this week's Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament, taking place at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. on March 2-6. The Hoosiers earned a double bye into the quarterfinals of the tournament and will play their first game on Friday, March 4 at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET live on Big Ten Network.
