BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 53 Indiana men's tennis team improved to 4-0 over their last two weekends at home with a 4-0 win over Ball State and a 5-2 victory over No. 41 Washington.
After beating Ball State in a 4-0 sweep, the Hoosiers turned their attention to the No. 41 Huskies, who they beat 4-3 on the road last season.
"Against Washington it was a very tough match and that is what we were expecting," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "They are a tough team and we were able to grit out a win, which shows a lot of character on our team."
In front of a loud home crowd the Hoosiers won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point and get out to a 1-0 lead.
In singles senior Sam Monette, ranked No. 27, earned his sixth straight win in dual match play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 84 ranked Mitch Stewart.
Washington put their first point on the board with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles and nearly every match was in a third set at the time.
After dropping his second set, freshman Afonso Salgado battled back to give the Hoosiers their third point and less then a minute later junior Bloomington native Matthew McCoy clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The Hoosiers played out the remaining two matches and earned the 5-2 victory over the Huskies.
"I think we are being very successful because we are staying on what we did in the fall," Monette said. "Our team has proven we can beat some high level teams and players. All the guys are working very hard and becoming close as a team, which is helping us win matches."
Up next the Hoosiers begin a long set of road matches on Sunday at No. 36 Notre Dame with a 12:00 p.m. start time.
