BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After four spring practices, it's time for Indiana football to take a step back.
The Hoosiers wrapped up the first segment of spring ball Thursday afternoon before taking time off for spring break. The time away will allow for players and coaches to reflect on the first week before using up the remaining 11 practices to close out the spring.
"We're going to shut it down with spring break," head coach Kevin Wilson said. "Then we'll have three or four good weeks of spring ball at the back end here."
Part of the decision to split up the practice schedule was to avoid players and coaches falling victim to boredom. Wilson said he's hoping the break allows players to see the spring as more manageable than it is a heavy workload.
"The thought was let's jumpstart them and then basically have a coaches' evaluation week," Wilson said. "Not that we'll be sitting in the office and just meeting and meeting, but let's just assess."
The one area Wilson won't be needing to overhaul any time soon is the energy he's seen at practice.
He's gone out of his way to say the first four practices were among the most enthusiastic he's seen in his time in Bloomington. He credits at least part of the resurgence to the work of new strength and conditioning coach Keith Caton and the Hoosiers work in the winter.
"It starts with the coaches," Wilson said. "You're not trying to be a cheerleader. You've got to make corrections. You've got to hold them to standards. You've got to work them hard. But there's a positive and an aggressive, energetic approach to our program right now. It's happened every day."
Wilson said the most encouraging part of the energy he's seen has been that it's coming from all areas of the team, whether it be offense, defense or special teams. Not one position group in particular has dominated practice up to this point, which he said is a good sign of things to come.
"We've got a lot of work to do," Wilson said. "But it's a great group and I like the way they're going."
