BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Courtney Harnish has been selected as one of 18 Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Award Recipients, an award to honor IU seniors who have proven leadership on campus both inside and outside of the classroom.
Dr. Mueller's belief was that a university should promote the intellect, develop the personality, and teach citizenship as well as leadership to all students. She said this is accomplished through excellence in scholarship, research, and the milieu of co-curricular activities.
A committed student-athlete, Harnish is a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and the last two year received the Indiana Scholastic Achievement Award, which honors the academic excellence of one student-athlete every year in each varsity sport.
Harnish is pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Youth Development and is deeply involved in community service in Bloomington, volunteering her time at several organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, Pinnacle School and Girls Inc.
This past summer Harnish went outside of her community and traveled to Vietnam and part of the Coach for College Program, mentoring eighth and ninth graders in life skills, teaching math and coaching volleyball to children in rural Vietnam.
The Kate Hevner Mueller award recognizes students who have left the campus better than they found it by helping other students: learn more about themselves, each other and the world outside of the classroom so they could be successful inside the classroom.
