Hoosiers Walk Off UIC, 3-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Capped by a walk-off RBI single by sophomore Taylor Uden, Indiana Softball came back from a sixth-inning 2-0 deficit to defeat University of Illinois-Chicago on Friday, 3-2, and pick up its fourth-straight win.
The victory featured appearances from all three members of the pitching staff – Tara Trainer, Emily Kirk and Josie Wood – for the first time this season. Trainer got the start and tossed 5.1 innings, giving up two runs in the sixth but striking out eight. After Kirk finished out the sixth inning and faced one batter in the seventh, Wood came in and sent the Flames down in order as she earned the win.
Indiana's offense looked to get going early as the Hoosiers (15-9) put runners on base in every inning, but were unable to capitalize until late as UIC pitcher Elaine Heflin threw a solid game, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings before the Hoosiers scored in the sixth.
The Flames (12-9) broke the scoreless stalemate in the sixth frame as Tiana Mack-Miller sent a one-out single to left-center to bring in Lexi Watts. One batter later, Laura Swan made it 2-0 as she came home on a fielder's choice from Skylee James.
Indiana would not wait long to respond as junior Erin Lehman started the bottom of the sixth with a double off the wall in left-center. After a groundout by junior CaraMia Tsirigos moved Lehman to third, Uden picked up her first RBI of the day on a chopper over Heflin's head to put the Hoosiers on the board. Senior Michelle Huber tied the game at 2-2 on her third hit of the game to plate senior Shannon Cawley, who had reached via a walk.
Besides Huber, Indiana also saw multi-hit outings from Blitz, Lehman and Uden.
A one-out single by sophomore Rebecca Blitz sparked Indiana in the seventh, as she then moved to third on a single by Lehman. An intentional walk to Tsirigos loaded the bags for Uden, who sent a grounder through left-center to bring in Blitz and win the game.
IU returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Western Illinois in day two of the Hoosier Classic.
