Hoosiers Head To East Regional For Sweet Sixteen Matchup

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the Hoosiers set to take on No. 1 seed North Carolina in the East Region Semifinals on Friday, we take a look ahead to that matchup as well as a look back at some of the notes from the Second Round win over No. 4 seed Kentucky.
• Indiana will become the seventh team in tournament history to have played 100 games or more in the NCAA Tournament when it faces North Carolina on Friday evening in Philadelphia. IU is 66-33 in the event.
• The Hoosiers will be making their third trip in five years to the Sweet Sixteen after reaching the regional semifinals just once (2002) from 1995-2011.
• The Hoosiers will be playing North Carolina for the third time in the NCAA Tournament in their overall 14 meetings. In 1981, IU defeated UNC for the national championship in Philadelphia, 63-50, and in 1984, the Hoosiers knocked off the #1 ranked Tar Heels, 72-68, in Atlanta.
• The last time the team's met was in the 2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Indiana defeated UNC, 83-59, in Bloomington. That was the seventh career game for then freshmen and now senior's Yogi Ferrell for Indiana and Brice Johnson, Joel James and Marcus Paige for UNC.
• North Carolina Director of Player Personnel Sean May is the son of IU legend and former Naismith Award winner Scott May. They are one of four father and son combo's who have won NCAA basketball titles with Scott leading the Hoosiers to the last undefeated season ever in 1976 and Sean lifting the Tar Heels to the 2005 NCAA crown
• The Hoosiers are 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament in Philadelphia. IU won national championships in 1976 and 1981 in the Spectrum. The Cream and Crimson defeated UCLA and Michigan in 1976 and LSU and North Carolina in 1981 during their respective Final Four trips.
• IU snapped a three-game NCAA Tournament losing streak to Kentucky in the second round of the East Regional in Des Moines. The Hoosiers knocked off the Wildcats in 1973 enroute to the Final Four in St. Louis, but lost in 1975 in the Mideast Regional Final, in 1983 in the Mideast Regional Semifinals and in 2012 in the Southeast Regional Semifinals.
• With the 73-67 win over the Wildcats, Tom Crean improved to 3-1 against Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament, winning in 2003 and 2008 and losing in 2012. Crean is 6-3 in the NCAA Tournament at IU and his teams have held opponents to 27.5 shooting from long distance in those games, while knocking home 39.6% of its own three-point shots.
• The win was IU's first against a nationally ranked team in the NCAA Tournament since beating Oklahoma in the 2002 national semifinals.
• Senior Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell has played and started in an IU-best 136 games.
• Of teams playing at least two NCAA Tournament games this year, IU has the best three-point field goal defense at 21.2%. The Hoosiers also have allowed just 17 assists to 31 turnovers in two games.
• The Hoosiers have four players scoring in double figures including Ferrell (19.0), freshman Thomas Bryant (16.0), junior Troy Williams (12.5) and freshman OG Anunoby (10.5) through the first two NCAA Tournament games this season.
• Ferrell has 14 assists and just three turnovers in 36 minutes per game over the first two NCAA Tournament games.
