BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's basketball team had five student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition for 2015-16 as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Tyra Buss, Amanda Cahill, Alexis Gassion, Lyndsay Leikem and Jess Walter were all recognized as Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
Indiana's five honorees are the most for the program in a single year since 2012. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
This is the second career Academic All-Big Ten award for Leikem and the first for Buss, Cahill, Gassion and Walter. Leikem will graduate after three years at IU in May with degrees in criminal justice and psychology. She plans to move to the Washington, D.C. area to pursue a future career with the FBI.
Buss is a physical education major as Cahill is majoring in elementary education. Gassion is working on her degree in human development and family studies as Walter is majoring business marketing and professional sales.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the fall and spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Students eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying students must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program.
