BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (11-10) dropped the second game of its three game set with the Indiana State Sycamores, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Evan Bell scattered four hits through six innings of work and picked up three strikeouts in the no-decision. Sophomore Laren Eustace and senior Brian Wilhite each tallied two hits in the effort, while sophomore Isaiah Pasteur plated the Hoosiers' sole run on a pinch hit-triple in the seventh.
Bell retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, with the only Indiana State baserunner working a two-out walk in the top of the second.
Indiana State had better luck against Bell its second time through the lineup and manufactured the game's first run in the top of the fourth with the help of three hits.
The Hoosiers tagged six hits through their first five innings at the plate but weren't able to push a run across. Singles by sophomore Logan Sowers and freshman Ryan Fineman put runners on the corners in the bottom of the second, while Indiana also put two on in the third frame, courtesy of singles by junior Tony Butler and Eustace.
The Sycamores tried to add to its lead in the fifth and loaded the bases, but Bell jammed the batter to force a pop out to Butler at second.
Indiana finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. After Wilhite grabbed his second hit of the day, Pasteur roped a two-out, pinch-hit triple to right-center field to drive in Wilhite.
Indiana State used four hits and a Hoosier error to score three runs in the top of the eighth and added an additional run in the ninth to make it 5-1. Freshman Scotty Bradley led off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle and advanced to second off of Butler's two out walk, but both were left stranded.
The Hoosiers and Sycamores will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Bart Kaufman Field.
