BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind an explosive six-run sixth inning, Indiana Softball defeated Iowa on Saturday, 9-3, for the second straight day to secure the series win.
This marks the first conference-opening series win for Indiana (19-10, 2-0 Big Ten) since a 1997 sweep of Penn State.
The Hoosiers, who have seen an offensive surge as of late, tied their season high with 13 hits, including a 4-for-4 outing with three runs and an RBI from sophomore Rebecca Blitz. Those four knocks ties her career single-game high and marks the ninth time this season she has posted a multi-hit game.
Blitz's first run of the game came in the first inning as a chopper to short by senior Katelyn Conenna put the Hoosiers up 1-0.
Iowa (8-18, 0-2 Big Ten) responded quickly as a solo shot by Holly Hoffman led off the second inning before Iowa took the lead in the next frame as an RBI single by Sammi Gyerman plated Katy Taylor.
The Hawkeyes extended the lead to 3-1 as an Indiana fielding error with a pair of outs in the fourth allowed Haley Hansel to score from second base.
However, Indiana stormed right back as a two-run home run by junior CaraMia Tsirigos fell just underneath the scoreboard in left field to tie the game in the fifth. The homer was Tsirigos' second in five games and fourth of her season.
The Hoosiers broke the game open in the sixth as they plated six runs on five hits and a pair of bases-loaded walks. After sophomore Taylor Uden led off with a walk, sophomore Rachel O'Malley and senior Shannon Cawley singled to load the bags for Blitz, who singled to plate Uden. Junior Erin Lehman then sent a single up the middle to bring in O'Malley before back-to-back walks to Tsirigos and Conenna pushed Indiana's lead to 7-3. The final Indiana runs came on an RBI double by Kassi Farmer to left center to plate senior Alyssa Rosati, who ran for Tsirigos, and Lehman.
Freshman pitcher Josie Wood tossed her seventh complete game of the season, giving up just two earned runs on four hits to improve her record to 10-4 on the year.
Indiana will look for the series sweep against Iowa tomorrow at noon.
