BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's tennis junior Paula Gutierrez was named Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the conference office. It is Gutierrez's first career Big Ten weekly award.
Gutierrez went 2-0 in singles play last weekend in Indiana's two road conference matches at No. 9 Michigan on March 26 and at Michigan State on March 27. This is IU's first Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor since Katie Klyczek took home the award last season on April 14, 2015.
On Saturday against the ninth-ranked Wolverines, Gutierrez went toe-to-toe with the 15th-ranked singles player in the country in Brienne Minor. Gutierrez fell in the first set before rebounding to outlast minor 3-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (7) in Ann Arbor. The win gave Gutierrez her highest ranked singles victory of her career.
On Sunday in East Lansing, the Hoosiers were in a hole after dropping the doubles point to Michigan State. Gutierrez's straight-set victory by a tally of 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles over Davina Nguyen of MSU was vital in Indiana earning four singles wins to take the road match, 4-3.
The Alhaurin de la Torre, Spain, native is 3-1 so far in Big Ten singles play and has won each of her last three conference matches.
Indiana will host in-state rival Purdue this weekend in Bloomington on Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m. ET.
