Several future Hoosier track and field student athletes competed in the Hoosier State Relays this past weekend.
Head Coach Ron Helmer is very excited about the group of athletes, saying, "We worked really hard to recruit the state of Indiana, and you can see that the kids that we identified and went after had a significant impact on the outcome of the meet. More importantly, those kids were able to line up over and over again with big time performances for this time of year, and we're fortunate to have such a talented and competitive group joining us next fall."
Ben Veatch and Teddy Browning paired up to collect first place finishes in the 4x800m relay and the DMR. Browning led off the 4x800m relay with a 2:00 split. Veatch sealed the victory for Carmel High School with a 1:55 split. Browning, again, led off the DMR with a 3:15 split in the 1,200m run. Veatch raced home to victory with a split of 4:13 in the anchor 1,600m leg.
Cameron Clements was the third leg of the 4x800m relay for Carroll High School. His split of 2:00 paved the way for a third place finish in the event. He also anchored the fourth place DMR team with a 1,600m leg of 4:20.
In the small school section, Cooper Williams stole the show. Williams anchored the champion 4x800m relay time with a 1:55 split. He followed that up with a lead off 1,200m split of 3:16 for the champion DMR team from West Lafayette High School. He capped off the meet by splitting 49 seconds in a third place effort in the 4x400m relay.
The women's 3,200m run saw four signees compete. All four placed in the top six, led by first place finisher Katherine Free. Her winning time was 10:37. She also split a 5:00 anchor 1,600m leg in the DMR for the ninth place Cathedral team.
Carmel's Stacy Morozov finished fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:53.
Grace Walther took fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:54. She followed that up with a 5:01 split in the anchor leg of the DMR to secure victory in the event for Homestead High School.
