BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team announced Saturday (April 9) their team award winners at their 2015 Season Banquet at the Henke Hall of Champions. Junior Malia Fujisawa was named Indiana's Most Improved Player, Mollie Getzfread won the Hustle Award, sophomore Maddie Latino won the Offensive MVP honor, and freshman Noëlle Rother took home the Defensive MVP award.
Indiana's team awards are a result of a vote taken by the players from the 2015 season. The awards concluded an afternoon where the Hoosiers recollected on their success-filled first season under head coach Amanda Janney.
The team banquet also served as a celebration of the field hockey senior class of 2016: Karen Lorite, Rachel Stauffer, Sydney Supica, and Nicole Volgraf. The seniors were honored by kind words from their underclassmen teammates, a highlight video of their best plays from their careers, and speeches from their head coaches, parents, and friends.
Fujisawa started all 19 games in the Hoosiers' 2015 season after making eight appearances and one start in 2014. The junior played a vital role on Indiana's stingy defensive unit, which allowed just one goal in their last four regular season Big Ten games. She ranked second on the team in defensive saves with four.
Getzfread made 19 starts this season in central midfield while serving as one of Indiana's three captains in 2015. She served two assists on the year, and played a vital role in the Hoosiers' success in the middle of the turf.
Latino played an invaluable part of Indiana's offensive success in 2015, leading all Hoosiers with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. Her three game-winning goals in 2015 goes down as the eighth-most in IU history. The Big Ten named her the Offensive Player of the Week after the Hoosiers' wins over Iowa and Northwestern, and she received All-Big Ten Tournament honors after scoring a goal against Penn State in the quarterfinals.
Rother finished the year as one of the most outstanding young goalkeepers in the country. In her first collegiate season, she made 114 saves (3rd – IU History), recorded two complete shutouts, and boasted a save percentage of .770 (4th – IU History). She received four Big Ten weekly honors last season, including two in one week, on her way to a second team All-Big Ten selection. In the Hoosiers' game against Maryland, Rother made 16 saves (2nd – IU history) to preserve a shutout in the 70 minutes of regulation.
The Hoosiers return to their spring schedule this coming weekend, when they travel to Ann Arbor to take part in Hockeypalooza on Saturday, April 16. Indiana will play a pair of exhibition games against Ohio State and Kent State at Ocker Field.
