BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped a 12-2 decision to Louisville in five innings on Tuesday night. The Hoosiers jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame before the Cardinals scored 10 unanswered runs.
After sophomore Rebecca Blitz reached on a Louisville fielding error to lead off the first inning, junior Erin Lehman singled through the left side to put two on. Senior Michelle Huber then sent a one-out double off the wall in left center to plate both runners and give Indiana the advantage.
However, the lead did not last past the next inning as the Cardinals (27-9) scored a trio of runs to jump ahead. After three walks loaded the bags, Jordan McNary doubled to center field to plate two runs before a bases-loaded walk brought in a third.
The duo of Blitz and Lehman looked to get something going again for the Hoosiers (22-17) in the bottom of the second as a walk and Lehman's second hit of the game put both on with two away, but a groundout ended the threat.
A quiet third inning kept the score at 3-2 before the Cardinals added five runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Maryssa Becker, Hailey Smith and Brittany Sims, as well as a hit batter with the bases loaded.
The final frame saw Louisville plate a pair of runs on an RBI double from Becker before RBI singles from Megan Hensley and Nicole Pufahl pushed the Cardinals' lead to 12-2.
Up next, the Hoosiers return to Big Ten play as they travel to East Lansing, Mich. for a three-game set with Michigan State. First pitch is set for Friday at 4 p.m.
