Pearson lifts spring total to eight with go-ahead goal versus Kent State
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Indiana field hockey team completed their second tournament weekend of the 2016 spring season on Saturday with their trip to Hockeypalooza at the University of Michigan. The Hoosiers took the turf for two games against opponents from the 2015 season, Ohio State and Kent State. The Buckeyes won the first game, 3-1, and the Hoosiers and Golden Flashes battled to a 1-1 draw.
Taylor Pearson and Maddie Latino slotted one goal apiece in the Hoosiers' two games. With her go-ahead goal against Kent State, Pearson now has eight scores in the spring season. For Latino, her equalizer in the first half against Ohio State was her second in the last two weekends.
Katie Johnson and Noëlle Rother combined for an impressive dual effort in the goal. Rother totaled six saves between the second half against Ohio State and the first half against Kent State. Johnson tallied five saves in the first half versus Ohio State and the second half of the game versus Kent State.
Ohio State 3, Indiana 1
Indiana faced Big Ten foe Ohio State in their first game of the day. The Buckeyes pulled away with two unanswered scores down the stretch after a dead-even first half.
The Hoosiers were trailing 1-0 with the clock winding down on the first half, but they kept the pressure high in hopes of tying before the break. With two minutes remaining, Pearson intercepted an Ohio State pass and launched a counterattack the other way. The rising junior found Latino down the turf, and connected to set up a one-on-one scenario between Latino and the Buckeyes' goalkeeper. Latino pulled the ball to her right side and converted her attempt to square the score line just before halftime.
As a team, Indiana accumulated 12 shots against Ohio State. They gained an equal amount of experience with penalty corners, attacking on five attempts and defending five Ohio State attempts.
Indiana 1, Kent State 1
The Hoosiers closed their weekend with another airtight matchup against Kent State, which lived up to the competitive nature displayed in Indiana's 4-3 overtime win over the Golden Flashes in the 2015 season. This time around, the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Pearson continued her high scoring run through the spring season with a stellar shot in the first two minutes of the game. The forward connected on a reverse shot inside the circle and sent it to the upper-right corner of the goal, giving Indiana the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes equalized with eight minutes remaining in the second half, but the Hoosiers continued to control the game despite the even score total. Indiana found success in their passing throughout the game and showcased their ability to maintain possession.
Indiana tallied 14 total shots against the Golden Flashes, and won the penalty corner count by a 6-2 margin. Rising senior Kate Barber preserved the draw with a crucial defensive save.
