BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Baseball (20-14, 6-3 Big Ten) carried a two-run lead into the eighth inning, but the Iowa Hawkeyes were able to force extra innings and snap the Hoosiers' win streak with a 6-5 win to salvage one game in the three-game set.
Senior Evan Bell went 3.2 innings in the start and freshman B.J. Sabol bridged the fourth inning before handing the ball over to freshman Jonathan Stiever, who dished two hitless innings and picked up two strikeouts.
Freshman Scotty Bradley led Indiana with three RBI to go along with two hits. Juniors Austin Cangelosi and Tony Butler chipped in the Hoosiers' two other runs, while junior Craig Dedelow chipped in two hits in the effort. Junior Thomas Belcher (2-2) took the loss, tossing three innings, scattering six hits and notching three strikeouts.
Despite an early Hoosier throwing error, a 5-4-3 double play cleared the base paths and gave Bell a 1-2-3 opening frame. Walks to junior Alex Krupa and sophomore Logan Sowers put two on early for Indiana. Following a balk to bump both runners into scoring position, Bradley snuck a ball through the right side to put Indiana up, 1-0. Butler upped the score to 2-0 with a two-out solo home run in the second.
The Hawkeyes manufactured two runs in the visiting half of the fourth to even to score at two-all. Sabol inherited runners on the corners but two-straight walks gave Iowa a 3-2 lead for its first lead of the series. A 6-4 putout by senior Brian Wilhite ended the damage and left three stranded.
Stiever tossed a scoreless fifth and stranded a runner at second by striking out the first Hawkeye of the game. Indiana got the tying run aboard when Dedelow led off the bottom half of the inning with a single. Sowers broke a single through the left side before freshman Ryan Fineman walked to load the bases with no outs. Bradley turned on a two-strike pitch and sent it to right field for a two-RBI single, giving Indiana back a 4-3 edge. Cangelosi's sacrifice fly upped the lead to 5-3, but sound fielding by Iowa's Ryan Erikson on the mound stopped Indiana's threat.
Steiver tossed a 1-2-3 sixth before junior Jake Kelzer took over pitching duties for the seventh. He worked around two hits to preserve Indiana's two-run lead. Iowa battled back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the eighth, including a safety squeeze to make it 5-5 and send the game into extra innings.
Three hits in the top of the 10th plated the game-winner for Iowa.
Indiana is back in action on Wednesday when the team travels to Xavier. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
