BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – He grew up in Bloomington attending IU basketball and football games. His father was a Bloomington native who walked on to the football team. His grandparents loved the school and its sports.
It was almost a foregone conclusion that Matthew would end up at IU.
Only, the school didn't want him.
Matthew McCoy, the Bloomington High School North tennis player, wasn't good enough to be a Hoosier. The school looked at him but passed.
Not wanting to give up tennis—the sport to which he had dedicated countless hours, hoping to one day play for Indiana—Matthew committed to Bradley University and left his dream school behind.
"It just didn't work out," Matthew said. "That was kind of the end of it."
Matthew moved on. He got better, too—a lot better. In the final months of his high school career, he started climbing the national rankings quicker than he or any of his coaches anticipated.
Then the unexpected happened.
