INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The Indiana women's golf team closed the 2016 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at The Fort Golf Resort with a final round team score of 1-under par 287, to give them a total score of 866 (+2) and seventh place. It's the best team finish since a fifth place finish in 2013, when the Hoosiers finished fifth.
Indiana junior Ana Sanjuan posted a final round score of 2-under par 70 to move up the individual leaderboard and finished in a tie for 15th at 1-under par for the tournament at 215. It is the best individual finish by an IU player at the Big Ten Championship since Laura Nochta finished tied for seventh in 2010.
Sanjuan was not alone in the Top 25, as Erin Harper (T21), Camille Chevalier (T25) and Alix Kong (T25) all joined her, marking the first time since 2008 that the Hoosiers had four players finish T25 or better.
On Sunday, it was the freshman Harper that posted the best round of the day, and she did it with a little flair. As IU started on No. 10 in the final round, Harper carded six consecutive pars before birdies on her seventh and ninth holes to make the turn at 2-under par. She then ran into two bogeys on her 13th and 14th holes to fall back to even par. But she would take advantage of some easier finishing holes, closing with birdies on her final three holes to shoot 69, her best round of the season.
Sanjuan was rewarded for her patience on her first nine holes, as she continued to hit steady iron shots into the greens, but was unable to make the birdie putts. After five straight pars, she birdied her sixth hole – No. 15 – and then hit an outstanding long iron shot into the difficult 18th green and converted the birdie putt to get to 2-under par after nine holes. On her back nine, she carded nine pars, including a number of solid par saving putts to finish with a score of 70.
The next best round of the day belonged to Theresa-Ann Jedra, who posted a 1-over par 73 – her best round of the season – and tied for 50th individually. Her day began with a bogey on her first hole but she quickly erased that with a birdie on the very next hole. She would go on to post par on the next nine holes before back-to-back bogeys put her at 2-over par. The Lexington, Ohio, native, was able to get one back with a birdie on her 17th hole. Dating back to her final round at The Fort Golf Resort last year, she has registered a score of 74 or better in three of her last four rounds.
Senior Camille Chevalier was able to close out her Big Ten Championship in style, rolling in a downhill birdie putt to post a 75. Her total score of 219 put her in a tie for 25th, her seventh Top 25 finish of the season and fourth in a row.
Also posting 75 on Sunday was Alix Kong, as her scorecard showed one birdie, 14 pars, one bogey and one double bogey.
Rounding out the IU lineup was Pear Siriko, as she logged a 77 in her final round and tied for 65th individually.
The NCAA Selection Show for women's golf will take place at 6:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel. A total of 72 teams are selected and assigned to one of four regional locations, with 18 teams being assigned to each location.
