Hoosiers Ousted in Big Ten Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Indiana women's tennis (15-12, 5-7 B1G) season came to an end in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday with a 4-1 loss to the Michigan State Spartans (14-11, 5-7 B1G).
In doubles, the Spartans marched out to a lead early on all across the board before the Hoosiers put together a fight. After falling at No. 2 doubles, the Hoosiers bounced back to take No. 3 doubles, 6-3. With the doubles point coming down to the No. 1 doubles spot, Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean couldn't quite squeak out a win, falling 6-4.
The Spartans started their winning in singles from the bottom as Emily Meyers defeated Kim Schmider, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6. Stephanie Smith would help get the Hoosiers back in the match as she won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Leading 2-1, the Spartans etched further ahead as Davina Nguyen outlasted Sarah McLean, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3.
It would be a win at No. 5 singles that clinched the match victory for the Spartans thus ending the Hoosiers' 2015-16 season.
"This was a disappointing loss but we knew both teams were evenly matched," head coach Lin Loring said. "We beat them 4-3 outside early in the season. Unfortunately, the weather was bad today. They are much better indoors in their facility. Because of the low bounce and difficult sight lines, it's a hard place to play. No one on our team had played there before. We just couldn't win the no-ad points. It wasn't our day."
