Campbell leads defensive effort with 19 saves
BOSTON – The Indiana water polo team advances to the CWPA Championship semifinals after their wire-to-wire win against seventh-seeded Brown (9-24). The Hoosiers (22-6) took care of business on both sides of the ball, but IU's defensive efforts stood out in the 10-4 quarterfinal win.
Mary Campbell continued her excellent run of form from the end of the regular season with another outstanding afternoon in the cage. The senior tallied 19 saves, her second-highest total of the season, while also converting a steal in front of the goal. It was Campbell's fifth game this season with at least 15 saves, and her third 15-plus save game in her last four starts.
Jennifer Beadle led a well-balanced attack with Indiana's only hat trick in the game, which she accomplished on six shot attempts. The sophomore has tossed a hat trick in six games this season.
Other Hoosiers in the scoring ledger include Candyce Schroeder, who scored two goals including a point-blank backhand she muscled into the cage early in the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman Karrie Kozokar was Indiana's other multi-goal scorer, earning a pair of scores on two power play opportunities. Jordan Elwood, Kelly Matthews, and Sarah Myers followed with one goal apiece.
Schroeder and Kate Pipkin championed the distribution with two assists each, while Beadle and Matthews got in on the action with assists in the first and fourth quarter, respectively.
On the defensive end, Indiana held Brown to just one converted power play in 10 opportunities. The Hoosiers combined for eight steals, led by Kelly Matthews with three picks and two field blocks. Campbell and the Hoosiers' field players held off an aggressive Brown attack that out-shot Indiana, 39-24.
The Hoosiers continued their highly effective scoring on the power play, converting on two-of-three chances in the game. Since their CWPA opener against Michigan earlier this month, Indiana has converted on 47% of their six-on-five chances.
The Game
From the opening sprint, Indiana went all-out on both sides of the pool. Schroeder forced a five-meter penalty on the Hoosiers' first trip to their offensive end, which Matthews converted with aplomb to take a 1-0 lead. Schroeder entered the score sheet next, doubling IU's lead off of an assist from Pipkin. Beadle followed with her first of three scores to make it 3-0 before Brown got on the board on their next possession. On the last play of the quarter, Beadle found Myers to give Indiana their highest-scoring period of the game, and a 4-1 lead, after eight minutes.
The Hoosiers and Bears traded goals in the second quarter, but Indiana had the final word in the half. Two of the Hoosiers' three scores came on power play scores from Kozokar, with the second coming four seconds before the half time buzzer.
Indiana widened their lead in the final period after a scoreless third quarter from both teams. Schroeder connected on her second goal at the start of the fourth, and Beadle completed her hat trick off of an assist from Schroeder.
The Hoosiers capped the win with an outstanding play from Jordan Elwood. The junior forced a steal in the middle of the pool, collected the ball, and drove down the pool and finished a one-on-one chance against Brown Goalkeeper Marisol Dakan. The fast break score was Elwood's seventh of the year.
