BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld became the third Hoosier selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, as the Washington Redskins made him the 187th overall pick in round six Saturday afternoon at the Auditorium Theater of Roosevelt University in Chicago. The three IU draftees are the most for the program since 2010 (Rodger Saffold, Jammie Kirlew and Ray Fisher).
Sudfeld was joined by offensive lineman Jason Spriggs, the 48th overall pick (round 2) by the Green Bay Packers, and Jordan Howard, the 150th overall pick (round 5) by the Chicago Bears.
The Modesto, Calif., native is the 12th IU player selected by the Redskins and the first since tight end Ted Bolser in 2014. He became the first Hoosier quarterback drafted since Gibran Hamdan went to Washington in 2003.
Sudfeld closed out his career as the school's all-time passing touchdowns (61), passing yardage (7,879), 350-yard games (6) and 300-yard games (11) leader, and ended up second with 593 completions, third with 8,011 total yards and fourth with 983 attempts in 37 career games (26 starts).
In 2015, he finished first on the program's single-season passing charts with 3,573 passing yards, five 350-plus yard games and seven 300-yard games, second with 27 touchdowns, fourth with 412 attempts and tied for fourth with 247 completions.
Indiana finished 2015 first in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense, while placing second in rushing offense in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers became the first team since Ohio State in 1995 to lead the league in total, passing and scoring offense.
IU led the Big Ten in scoring offense for the first time since the league began using the entire season as the statistical champion in 1985. Indiana had not led the league in total offense since 1988.
The Hoosiers became the fourth college football team to have a 3,500-yard passer, a pair of 1,000-yard running backs and a 1,000-yard receiver in the same year. IU was also one of only two Power Five conference teams with two 1,000-yard running backs (Baylor).
