BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana baseball has teamed up with IU's INSPIRE Living-Learning Center to start Grand Slam for Literacy, a program designed to motivate local elementary students to read more.
Grand Slam for Literacy participants were rewarded based on the amount of reading they completed. Prizes included tickets to IU baseball games on April 9 and 10 against Purdue, the opportunity to stand on the field with the team during the national anthem and more.
Nearly 300 kids signed up for the first-ever Grand Slam for Literacy last year. Begining in its second year, Grand Slam for Literacy started at the beginning of February. Players visited local schools earlier this year to visit with students and emphasize the importance of reading.
