Hoosiers In the Mix After First Round at Otter Creek

COLUMBUS, Indiana – The Indiana men's golf team was able to fight through cold and windy conditions at Otter Creek Golf Course to post a team score of 295, which leaves them in fourth place out of 13 teams heading into Sunday's final round. The Hoosiers are just four shots behind the tournament leaders, Purdue, while Marquette and Ball State are two shots ahead of IU.
The top individual performance for Indiana came from redshirt freshman Jack Sparrow, who is tied for third place after carding a 1-under par 71 playing as an individual. Despite the windy conditions, with gusts near 20 miles per hour, Sparrow, who started on the 15th hole, bogeyed his second hole before reeling off 14 pars and two birdies over the remainder of his round to get to 1-under par. The score of 71 matches his season-best round that was set at the Windon Memorial back in September.
Junior Andrew Havill continued his stellar play over the last couple weeks, leading the way for the IU team score with an Even par 72 in his first round, which puts him in a tie for 10th. The Carmel, Indiana, native was two over after his first six holes after starting on the second hole. As he made the turn to the back nine, he was still 2-over par but found the groove and made birdie on 13, 14, and 15 to get to 1-under par before a bogey on his final hole brought him back to Even.
Keegan Vea is just one shot behind Havill and tied for 14th at 1-over par. His scorecard looked the opposite of Havill's, with Vea doing his damage on the front nine – playing it in 2-under par – while finding his struggled on the back and playing it in 3-over par.
The other three IU players competing for the team – Jake Brown, Brendon Doyle and Max Kollin – all posted a first round score of 3-over par 75. Brown used four birdies to offset a double bogey and five bogeys while Doyle had a birdie on six and an eagle on 14 to offset his four bogeys and one double bogey. Kollin's scorecard was much more steady, with four bogeys and one birdie to his credit.
In addition to Sparrow competing as an individual, the Hoosiers have four others that are also playing as individuals.
Christian Fairbanks, who is a Columbus, Indiana, native is tied for 46th after his round of 77. Trevor Ranton is one shot behind Fairbanks at 6-over par 78, Will Seger is 8-over par with a 80 and Matthew Weber is in 74th after his first round score of 82.
Sunday will have the teams play 18 holes to complete the 36-hole event, with the teams going off No. 1 and No. 10 tee starting at 9:00 a.m. ET.
