Indiana’s Class of 2016 remembered for sparking turnaround
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Athletics honored 106 students who are eligible to graduate in May/August 2016 on Saturday, May 7 with an open house at the Henke Hall of Champions in the North End Zone at Memorial Stadium. The four seniors on the Indiana field hockey team—Rachel Stauffer, Sydney Supica, Nicole Volgraf, and Karen Lorite—were among those recognized.
"Congratulations to all of our students who earned their degrees this year," Director of Athletics Fred Glass said. "Earning an Indiana University degree has always been a top priority for IU Athletics, and we cannot thank our students enough for their hard work and dedication. An Indiana University degree will serve them well throughout their lives, and we are so proud of their achievement."
The Hoosiers' senior class played a vital role in the turnaround during head coach Amanda Janney's first season in Bloomington. The foursome combined for 37 points on 14 goals and nine assists in 2015, including three game-winners. In their final season, Stauffer, Supica, Volgraf, and Lorite made a total of 55 starts, and led Indiana to their highest Big Ten Conference win total in program history.
Stauffer tallied 11 goals, two game-winners, and seven assists in her 71 appearances for Indiana. The Ephrata, Pennsylvania native was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and contributed to Indiana's NFHCA National Academic Team selection in 2015. Stauffer played a crucial part in the Hoosiers' shutout win at Ohio State last fall, scoring one goal and connecting on an assist.
Supica goes down as one of the best defenders in the history of the program. The graduating senior shattered Indiana's career defensive saves record with 23 in 69 appearances, and she owns the top three single-season records. Her senior season total of seven defensive saves ranked sixth in the NCAA standings. Supica is a two-time NFHCA All-West Region honoree, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, and picked up a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor at the end of the 2015 season. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native capped her career with a standout performance in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game, where she netted a hat trick in front of her hometown crowd.
Volgraf served as one of Indiana's team captains during her senior season, where she scored two goals to bring her career total to 16 (12th-IU history). Last week, Indiana University presented Volgraf with the Big Ten Medal of Honor, the conference's most exclusive and prestigious award, at the Spirit of Indiana Showcase for her exemplary career as a student-athlete, on and off the turf. The Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania native is the first Indiana field hockey player to win Big Ten Medal of Honor since Haley Exner (2008). In addition, Volgraf thrice received Academic All-Big Ten honors, and earned the All-Big Ten Sportsmanship award in 2015. At the Spirit of Indiana Showcase, Volgraf received acknowledgement for her loyal service to Indiana University Athletics as the department's president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Lorite played in 70 games over her four-year career, making 52 starts. The Terrassa, Catalonia native ranked third in scoring during her senior year with five goals and four assists, which included crucial performances in wins over Pacific (one goal, two assists) and Northwestern (one goal, one assist). Lorite was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time NFCHA National Academic Squad honoree. At the Spirit of Indiana showcase, Lorite received the Hoosier Award for "bringing honor and distinction to Indiana University in her representative sport during the academic year", and the Hoosier HEROES award for "helping with the transition to college life for first-year student-athletes."
