Hoosiers shine at Spirit of Indiana Showcase
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored its student-athletes at the sixth-annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, April 25, at the Indiana University Auditorium. The Showcase honored student-athletes with year-end awards from 2015 and 2016.
One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the winners of Indiana's Anita Aldrich Leadership Award, which recognizes a female student-athlete for best exemplifying Anita Aldrich's ideals of leadership, scholastic achievement and athletic ability among all female student-athletes. This year, Indiana water polo senior Candyce Schroeder received the distinguished honor.
Schroeder finishes an illustrious four-year career at Indiana University with 91 starts in 114 appearances. The San Clemente, California native scored 172 goals (8th-IU history), including 64 in her senior season (10th-IU history), in addition to 70 assists and 66 steals. A prolific goal-scorer with a knack for creating power play opportunities, Schroeder tallied an astounding 148 drawn ejections in her career.
In her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, Schroeder landed on the year-end All-CWPA team, receiving second team honors in 2014 and 2015 with a first team selection this season. Schroeder's all-out performances in the CWPA Championship yielded a second team All-CWPA Tournament accolade in 2015 and a first team selection this season. And, after a dominating run to the 2014 CWPA title and an NCAA Tournament berth, Schroeder received All-NCAA Championship second-team plaudits.
All the while, Schroeder excelled out of the pool in the classroom. Schroeder's dedication to achieving her degree resulted in 11 academic honors in her career, including three Academic All-Big Ten awards, three CWPA Scholar-Athlete accolades, and three ACWPC All-Academic selections.
Another Hoosier on center stage during Monday's showcase was freshman Kate Pipkin, who demonstrated her musical acumen with a solo act featuring the Newport Beach, California native playing guitar while singing a medley of well-known music. As a freshman, Pipkin led Indiana with 53 assists in her debut season, along with 26 goals and 40 steals.
In addition to Schroeder's Anita Aldrich Leadership Award, the following honors were presented to members of the Indiana water polo team:
