UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Behind a complete game shutout by Tara Trainer and home runs from sophomore Taylor Uden and junior CaraMia Tsirigos, Indiana Softball defeated Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, 4-0.
With the win, which was the first tournament victory for IU since 2006, the Hoosiers (29-24, 10-13 Big Ten) advance to Friday's quarterfinal and will face No. 1-seeded and No. 2 nationally-ranked Michigan (44-4, 21-2 Big Ten) at 8 p.m.
The complete game shutout from Trainer was her fourth of the season as she tossed six strikeouts and didn't allow a single Badger to advance past second base.
Indiana jumped out early as three straight singles started the second inning. After seniors Michelle Huber and Kelsey Dotson knocked one, sophomore Taylor Uden picked up the RBI as she brought in Huber on her first of three hits, a career high. Dotson and senior Shannon Cawley also put up multi-hit efforts as they each had two base knocks. Indiana looked to cause further damage as a walk to sophomore Rebecca Blitz packed the bases, but a popout left them loaded.
After surrendering a pair of singles in the first inning, Trainer settled in to retire nine straight Badgers before a two-out double by Sara Novak in the fourth inning broke the streak. However, a popup to second baseman Erin Lehman stranded her there.
Uden's final hit of the game came on her third homer of the season as she led off the sixth inning with a shot to left center. The Glendale, Ariz. native has been on a tear lately, registering 11 RBI in the last four games, bringing her season total to 31.
Wisconsin threatened to respond in the bottom of the frame as the Badgers earned a pair of two-out walks. However, Trainer continually worked herself out of jams, including a strikeout to end that threat.
Next inning, the Hoosiers added a pair of insurance runs on Tsirigos' team-leading seventh homer of the season. Cawley led off the inning with a double to set the stage for Tsirigos, who tied her career high with three hits in the win.
With the two homers against the Badgers, the Hoosiers have now hit 10 home runs in the last nine games, compared to 16 in the first 44 games of the year.
Indiana's Friday opponent, Michigan, earned a bye in the first round. The two teams previously met earlier this season with the Wolverines sweeping the series in Bloomington. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
