BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second consecutive season, Indiana Softball's Rebecca Blitz has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Second Team All-Midwest Region.
This marks the first time since 1998 that a Hoosier has earned First or Second team NFCA All-Region honors in back-to-back seasons. Monica Armendarez earned First Team accolades in 1997 and 1998.
Blitz, a native of Birmingham, Ala., led the way offensively in 2016, hitting a team-best .350 with 63 hits and 34 runs. She also picked up 17 RBI and earned 17 walks during the 2016 campaign. The sophomore recorded 29 stolen bases this season, good for second in the Big Ten and tied for third-most in a single season at Indiana. For her efforts, she was also named Second Team All-Big Ten, along with redshirt senior Shannon Cawley.
The centerfielder started all 54 games, hitting primarily in the leadoff spot. She registered 18 multi-hit games, including five three-plus hit performances.
Last season, she earned Second Team honors, marking the first time an IU freshman earned the accolade since Armendarez did so in 1995.
Student-athletes are nominated by their respective coaches and then voted on by coaches from each region.
Indiana's season came to an end in last weekend's Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers posted a 4-0 shutout against Wisconsin on May 12, marking the first tournament win since 2006, before falling to No. 2 Michigan in the quarterfinals.
