Indiana’s Class of 2016 among the greatest in program history
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Athletics honored 106 students who are eligible to graduate in May/August 2016 on Saturday, May 7 with an open house at the Henke Hall of Champions in the North End Zone at Memorial Stadium. The three seniors on the Indiana water polo team—MacKenzie Bonk, Mary Campbell, and Candyce Schroeder—were among those recognized.
"Congratulations to all of our students who earned their degrees this year," Director of Athletics Fred Glass said. "Earning an Indiana University degree has always been a top priority for IU Athletics, and we cannot thank our students enough for their hard work and dedication. An Indiana University degree will serve them well throughout their lives, and we are so proud of their achievement."
Indiana's senior class played a part in the Hoosiers' run to the NCAA Tournament in 2014, but they'll also be remembered for continuing a high level of success during the transitional 2016 season. After losing over 200 starts to graduation in 2015, Bonk, Campbell, and Schroeder piloted a team of underclassmen to the second highest single-season winning percentage in program history, culminating with Indiana's third consecutive CWPA title game appearance.
Bonk transferred from Golden West College (Calif.) at the start of her junior season, and provided crucial support alongside Campbell in the cage. She finishes her time at Indiana with 155 saves (9th-IU history), 17 steals, and nine assists in 26 appearances. Her goals against average of 6.88 ranks seventh in the Indiana record books.
Campbell emerges from the pool at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center as one of the best goalkeepers in Indiana water polo history. In 84 appearances and 65 starts, the Orlando, Florida native totaled 708 saves (3rd-IU history), 48 steals, and 13 assists. Her 302 saves in her senior season is the fourth-highest single-season total in program history, and she set school records this year with 25 saves and 42 shots faced in the Hoosiers' overtime battle with UC San Diego. Campbell was an All-CWPA Tournament honoree last season, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient, a 2015 ACWPC All-Academic team member, and a CWPA Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete selection.
Schroeder, like Campbell, leaves a legacy as one of the best centers in the 19-year history of the Indiana water polo team. She tallied 172 career goals (7th-IU history), 70 assists, 66 steals, and 148 drawn ejections. Her ability to draw power-play opportunities sparked the Hoosiers' attack since joining the team in 2013. Schroeder is a three-time All-CWPA honoree and earned her first selection to the first team after a 64-goal season in 2016. In addition, Schroeder has twice received All-CWPA Tournament first team honors, and earned a spot on the All-NCAA Tournament second team in 2014. Her drive for success carried over to the classroom, where the Psychology major racked up eight academic honors from the Big Ten, CWPA, and ACWPC in her first three seasons.
