CHICAGO - Uexpected news turned out to be good news for Nick Zeisloft.
The former Lyons and Indiana basketball standout was enjoying free time away from school at his home in La Grange on Monday, April 25, when he suddenly had to change his plans due to some positive news: He was Indiana's male recipient of this year's Big Ten Medal of Honor, which was presented to him later that night.
The annual award is given to one male and female athlete at each Big Ten school who demonstrate excellence in athletics and academics.
Zeisloft had just completed his graduate work at Indiana's Kelley School of Business, earning a master's degree of science in finance, when Hoosiers junior forward Collin Hartman called him. Zeisloft's teammate informed him that he would have to pick up his award in person that night at the Spirit of Indiana Showcase — an awards banquet for all Indiana student-athletes held at the IU Auditorium. Zeisloft said the short notice caused his parents to miss the presentation.
The 23-year-old Zeisloft quickly researched why he was being honored. The Big Ten, the nation's oldest Division I conference, commemorated the 102nd anniversary of its Medal of Honor award this season.
Zeisloft was also named to the Academic All-Big Ten team and has a 3.5 grade-point average.
"The reason I can say I won this award is by taking the extra step and working hard," he said. "My work ethic is a huge part of my success in basketball and academics."
