BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team will play 16 matches at home and host two non-conference tournaments in the 2016 season.
The 2015 season saw the Hoosiers continue to make strides, by going 16-16 as they finished at .500 or better overall for the first time since their 2010 run to the Sweet 16.
For the sixth time in the last 25 years the Hoosiers of 2015 won 10 or more non-conference matches and extended their streak of winning at least one non-conference tournament to nine seasons.
With a strong senior class returning for their last go at it and an impressive group of freshmen set to join the squad, IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan is very optimistic about the upcoming season.
"We have had a very productive spring and are ready for the challenge of the 2016 season," she said. "We are excited to get in front of our home crowd to kick off the season and host two non-conference tournaments."
"We came in eager to learn and get better this spring," senior Megan Tallman said. "All spring it was fun to be in the gym and there was never a day that was wasted toward achieving our goals and meeting our standard of excellence."
The Hoosiers open the 2016 season at home by hosting the Indiana Invitational on August 26 and 27. The season and home opener will be at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday Aug. 26 against Northern Kentucky. Other teams in the tournament are Evansville and Marshall.
Indiana will depart for the San Francisco Invitational next with matches against Campbell, San Francisco, Columbia and Princeton on Sept. 2 and Sept. 3.
The following weekend the Hoosiers will travel south to Florida Gulf Coast with matches against Marist, South Alabama, and FGCU.
"I know the players are excited about our destinations for our away tournaments – San Francisco and Florida Gulf Coast," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "They are very attractive tournaments with the opponents we will play but it will also be a nice experience for our team."
Indiana will return home and close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with the Hoosier Classic on Sept. 16 and 17 with Arkansas State, IUPUI and 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Cleveland State.
Dunbar-Kruzan said she is happy with the schedule that has been constructed.
"Scheduling is a big part of our job now, especially in the Big Ten," she said. "We have to try to balance our non-conference matches between winning, RPI and preparing us to compete in the best conference in the country."
The Big Ten schedule will bring about the same challenges as the Hoosiers kick off Big Ten play with a home match against Northwestern on Wednesday September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
The matches against Purdue will be split this year with the Hoosiers traveling to West Lafayette on Saturday Sept. 24 and the Boilermakers coming to Bloomington on Wednesday Nov. 16.
With nine teams from the Big Ten making the 2015 NCAA Tournament the Hoosiers are ready to gear up for another challenging conference season.
"We have our work cut out for us in conference play," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "It wasn't a big year for graduation for many of the teams so we'll see a lot of what we saw last year."
Season tickets are available starting with reserved front row seating in the Red Zone with limited availability for $64. Meadowood residents can buy special reserved season tickets for $64. General admission bleacher seating is available at $48 for adults and $16 for youth (ages 3-18). Indiana University students and faculty and staff are free with a valid IU ID.
A flex season ticket package is also available where you receive eight vouchers redeemable at any regular season IU home match in 2016 for GA admittance. The cost is $32 for adults and $16 for youth.
Individual match tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. Children age two and under are free. Groups of 25 or more can buy tickets for $2 per person.
