OMAHA, Neb. — Indiana Baseball (32-24) was eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament on Friday evening, following a 3-0 decision to the Maryland Terrapins at T.D. Ameritrade Park.
Senior Evan Bell went 3.1 innings before giving way to the Hoosiers' bullpen, which limited Maryland to just three hits over 5.2 innings. Sophomore Luke Stephenson and Kent Williams tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, while juniors Thomas Belcher and Jake Kelzer closed out the eighth and ninth innings with scoreless efforts.
Maryland's Brian Shaffer held Indiana to two hits in a complete game effort and received early run support off a two-run home run in the opening frame of the game. He escaped trouble in the bottom of the second, as freshman Luke Miller's single though the left side was wiped away with quick double play.
Despite scoring chances for the Terrapins, the Hoosiers' defense was able to keep the deficit at two runs. Stephenson inherited two runners in the top of the fourth before forcing 6-4-3 double play.
The score held until Maryland added an insurance run in the seventh inning. A Hoosier fielding error gave way to the score, although Belcher used a fly out on the next batter to leave two runners stranded. After working out of trouble in the top half, sophomore Logan Sowers took a 1-1 pitch back up the middle with one away in the home half of the seventh, but Indiana would be unable to bring him home.
Maryland retired Indiana in order in the bottom of the ninth to advance to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.
