MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Indiana baseball (28-17, 13-5 Big Ten) used a 3-2 series-clinching victory over the 19th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers to regain first place in the Big Ten on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Evan Bell lasted 5.2 innings in the win, ringing up four and mixing eight hits for two runs. Sophomore B.J. Sabol tossed 1.2 innings of hitless ball in relief and also picked up four strikeouts. Junior Jake Kelzer allowed just one hit and two strikeouts in the four-out save situation.
Freshman Luke Miller picked up three hits for the third time this season, boasting a perfect 3-for-3 offensive performance. Junior Alex Krupa continued to feast on Minnesota pitching with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a run scored. Junior Craig Dedelow, sophomore Logan Sowers and senior Brian Wilhite each drove in a run in the effort.
Both teams traded two quiet innings before the Hoosiers had back-to-back singles to put two runners on base in the top of the third. The Gophers used a groundout and fly out to centerfield to clear the threat. Three hits in the bottom of the frame broke the scoreless contest and gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead. Indiana induced a 5-4-3 double play to keep the score at 1-0.
The Hoosiers found the answer in the top of the fifth. Krupa put runners on the corner with a single through the right side, advancing sophomore Tony Butler, who walked, to third base. He came around to score on Dedelow's ground-rule double, while a throwing error on the Gophers granted Krupa to head home and give Indiana a 2-1 lead.
Minnesota briefly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Indiana regained a 3-2 edge in the top of the sixth when junior Austin Cangelosi came around to score on Wilhite's single to left field.
Indiana loaded the bases in the visiting half of the seventh inning but was unable to score. Sabol registered two strikeouts in the bottom of the frame to preserve a one-run lead and retire the Gophers in order.
Krupa picked up his third hit of the game to lead off the top of the eighth and stole second but would be unable to score.
Kelzer picked up the four-out save and struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
Indiana turns around to face the Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday, May 10 with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m. from Bart Kaufman Field.
