BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Sam Monette earned 77 career singles wins and 75 career doubles wins and after a stellar senior season earned Ohio Valley Region Senior Player of the Year honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today.
Monette began the season by winning the singles title and pairing with teammate Daniel Bednarczyk to win the doubles title at the Ohio Valley ITA Regional Championships in the fall. That earned Monette a place at the UTSA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, where he took down the No. 7 seed, Nicolas Alvarez from Duke.
Monette is the first Hoosier to win the Ohio Valley Regional Senior Player of the Year award.
"I'm proud of Sam for earning this prestigious honor," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "It's a significant accomplishment and started with his great play in the fall season at the ITA Regional Championships. He followed that up with a lot of success in the spring season against tough opponents, playing many of them on the road. It is great for him to add this honor to his resume to finish an outstanding collegiate playing career."
Monette posted a 21-10 overall record in singles and a 17-12 record in doubles and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection for the second time in his career and the fourth time he has earned All-Big Ten honors.
In all, in the 2015-16 season, Monette earned five singles wins over ranked opponents and in doubles beat the then No. 1 doubles team in the country, Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares of Texas Tech, for one of their three wins over a ranked doubles opponent.
"I am very humbled by receiving this award," Monette said. "It is a great way to end my legacy here at IU and hopefully it will bring a lot of momentum to the incoming freshmen and our returning players."
Select coaches in each region compromised the awards committee and the national award winners for Division I will be announced on Tuesday May 24.
