A pair of Hoosiers hopes to heighten their skills against the nation’s best
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – This summer, during the long wait for the start of the Indiana field hockey season, junior Elle Hempt and freshman Sam Scire will train with some of the best young field hockey players in the nation. The duo will spend the beginning of their summer training with the USA Field Hockey Junior High Performance teams. Hempt cracked the training roster for the Midwest South High Performance site, and Scire will compete with the New Jersey High Performance squad.
"We're very happy that Elle and Sam were selected to be part of the USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers," said Indiana head coach Amanda Janney, who has worked closely with the High Performance program during her career. "USA Field Hockey has a great Olympic pipeline where our student-athletes have the opportunity to try out for the national team, and these training centers allow them the opportunity to train with the best in their region. We're happy that they made the most of the opportunity."
The centers bring together the best collegiate and recently graduated field hockey players to train prospective members of the USA Field Hockey National Team. Each regional site will select a team from their pool to participate in the Young Women's High Performance Tournament, which runs from June 28 to July 3 at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
For the players in attendance, the training sessions can bolster their abilities over the summer, building momentum as they head into the fall season. With coach Janney's experience working at the Pennsylvania High Performance center, she knows firsthand that players can improve their game, even if they don't make the final tournament rosters.
"It gives them the opportunity to accelerate their preparation for the fall, Janney said. "They're training with the best in their region, and those players in turn enter the next season at a high level."
Hempt joined Indiana University for the fall 2015 season, transferring from Temple University. She entered the season as a promising candidate in the backfield, but missed the regular season due to injury. Heading into the 2016 season, Hempt was voted into captaincy by her teammates after an outstanding display of leadership during her previous season on the sidelines.
Scire will make her regular season debut for the Hoosiers in the upcoming fall season, but the freshman has already grown accustomed to Indiana's style of play. The Wall, New Jersey native enrolled in the spring 2016 semester and began training with the Hoosiers during their spring season. Scire scored four goals in three weekends of spring action, an encouraging sign for her upcoming season with the attack.
Hempt and Scire will return from this experience with heightened skill sets, but they'll also benefit from a different set of coaches evaluating their abilities. The outside perspective, according to Indiana's head coach, can benefit the player in attendance. It can also provide assistance to a teammate when they reunite later in the summer.
"At those centers, they receive different coaching, different techniques, and a variety of tactics from some of the best coaches in their regions. We're hoping that they bring back some of the things they learn to make us a better team in August."
The Hoosiers return to the turf on Friday, August 19 with their Cream & Crimson Scrimmage, set to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET. Indiana will play their regular season home opener on Friday, August 26 at 3:00 p.m. ET against Louisville.
