
Indiana Swimming Posts Strong Showing on First Night of U.S. Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – The Indiana University men's and women's swimming program had a great start to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials on Sunday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.
Indiana alum Cody Miller qualified second overall for Monday night's final in the 100 breaststroke after a pair of personal-best swims in prelims and the evening semifinals.
After posting a personal-best time of 59.33 in the morning prelims, Miller eclipsed that mark in the semifinals, qualifying second overall for the event final with a mark of 59.09. Miller's time is the fourth-fastest time in the world this year and ranks him as the fourth-fastest American in the event in history.
Also in the 100 breast, Ian Finnerty had a tremendous showing, placing 11th overall with a personal-best time of 1:00.96. The Big Ten Champion in the 100 breast qualified for the semifinals with a time of 1:01.14, besting his previous best time.
In the final of the 400 freestyle, IU postgrad swimmer Zane Grothe placed fourth overall with a personal-best time of 3:45.60 – the 11th-fastest time in the world this year. Grothe had a great swim in the prelims, earning the No. 1 seed for the evening final with a time of 3:47.03.
Earlier in prelims, Indiana had a great showing in the men's 100 breaststroke. Tanner Kurz won Heat 11 with a time of 1:01.65 to place in a tie for 21st overall. Cody Taylor took 71st with a time of 1:03.33, while Sam Apa tied for 97th with a mark of 1:04.07. Levi Brock took 101st with a time of 1:04.16.
In the men's 400 freestyle prelims, Jackson Miller placed 45th with a time of 3:58.33, while Max Irwin took 51st with a mark of 3:58.80. Adam Destrampe placed 58th in 3:59.00, while Matthew Anderson took 84th with a time of 4:00.94. Ethan Curl finished 91st with a mark of 4:01.69.
Sam Lisy placed 33rd in the women's 400 IM with a personal-best time of 4:51.85, while Bailey Pressey touched the wall with a mark of 4:53.65 to finish 44th in the event.
In the women's 100 butterfly, Gia Dalesandro placed in a tie for 39th overall with a time of 1:00.32, while Olivia Barker finished tied for 108th place with a mark of 1:01.92.
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials will continue on Monday morning at 11 a.m. ET at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. The morning prelims will include the women's 100 backstroke, the men's 200 freestyle, the women's 100 breaststroke, the men's 100 backstroke and the women's 400 freestyle.
Monday's evening session will begin at 7:45 p.m. ET and will include the finals of the women's 100 butterfly, the men's 100 breaststroke and the women's 400 freestyle. The session will also include the semifinals of the men's 200 freestyle, the women's 100 breaststroke, the men's 100 backstroke and the women's 100 backstroke.
Monday's evening session will be broadcast live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
