Summer Update: NBA Summer League; AA Moves On In The Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – While a pair of former Hoosiers – Noah Vonleh and Verdell Jones III – saw their NBA Summer League action come to a close on Friday, two others – Kevin Yogi Ferrell and Troy Williams – will look to continue playing with a win in tournament play tonight.
Ferrell (Brooklyn Nets) and Williams (Phoenix Suns) have helped their teams to a spot in the quarterfinals of the Las Vegas Summer League. Ferrell and the Nets will play the Cleveland Cavaliers at 6:00 p.m. ET while Williams and the Suns take on the Denver Nuggets at 10:00 p.m. ET. Both games will be aired on ESPN2.
With the Nets, Ferrell has played in three games in Las Vegas, averaging 17.0 minutes per contest and scoring 8.3 points, grabbing 2.0 rebounds and dishing out 2.0 assists per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and helping the team to a 3-0 record when he has played.

Williams is coming off his best performance of the Summer League, when he scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and also hauled in eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action to help the Suns beat the Miami Heat on July 14. Overall, he has played in four game and averaged 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 17.2 minutes per game in Las Vegas.

Vonleh, who was playing with the Portland Trailblazers Summer League team, appeared in four games and scored in double figures in all four games. He also added double digit rebound totals in three of the four game he played. Overall, he posted averages of 12.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 31.5 minutes before the Trailblazers bowed out of the Summer League with a 86-71 loss to Utah in the consolation part of the bracket.

Jones was playing with the D-League Select team and saw action in four games, averaging 5.2 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.0 assist while playing 11.2 minutes per game. His best performance came in the first game of the Summer League when he led his team with 12 points and also tallied three rebounds and three assists.

Elsewhere in summer basketball action, the 'Armored Athlete' team which included former IU players Jordan Hulls, Christian Watford and Will Sheehey, opened play in "The Basketball Tournament" with a 92-60 win over Midwest Dream Squad.
AA got out quick, holding a 46-31 lead at halftime after shooting a blistering 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor and nailing eight 3-point field goals in the half. The second half was more of the same, as their field goal percentage for the half increased to 61.3 percent (19-of-31). For the game, AA shot 55.6 percent while they held Dream Squad to 31.9 percent (22-of-69) and just 5-of-25 from behind the 3-point line.
The leading scorer in the game was Sheehey, who went 8-of-11 from the floor and finished with 20 points in just 22 minutes of action. Watford came off the bench to score 13 points and grab a pair of rebounds. Hulls registered nine points and two assists in the winning effort.

Armored Athlete is the No. 7 seed in the Midwest Regional being played at the Shannon Center on the campus St. Francis University in Chicago, Illinois. They will take on No. 15 seed Canton Bulldogs on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CT (12:00 p.m. ET)
'The Basketball Tournament' is an open-application, 5-on-5, single-elimination, winner-take-all basketball tournament. In 2014, the winning team took home $500,000. In 2015, the winning team took home $1 millions and this year the winning team will claim $2 million.
