7/8/2016 1:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – With the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas set to get underway today (July 8), there will be a decided Indiana flavor in the desert with for IU players Verdell Jones III, Noah Vonleh, Kevin Yogi Ferrell and Troy Williams all scheduled to compete for various teams.
Ferrell signed a free agent deal with the Brooklyn Nets while Williams signed a deal to play for the Phoenix Suns. Vonleh, who just finished his third season in the NBA, will play for the Portland Trailblazers and Jones III, who played this past season with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA D-League will compete with a D-League Select team in Las Vegas.
Ferrell reached an agreement with the Nets after he left IU as the all-time leader in games played and started with 137 and was the first player in the 21st century to win multiple Big Ten titles wearing the Cream and Crimson. He finished sixth in career scoring with 1,986 points and was the all-time IU leader in assists with 633. He was second all-time in Hoosier lore with 272 three-point field goals made, but first in Big Ten play with 159, none bigger than a trey in the final minute at Iowa to help IU clinch its second outright Big Ten title in four years. As a freshman, the Indianapolis native was instrumental on offense and on defense in the final 50 seconds at Michigan to help lead IU to a Big Ten title and a 72-71 comeback win over the Wolverines. For his career, he averaged 14.5 points and 4.6 assists and shot 39.9% from three-point range. A Wooden All-American choice as a senior, he also earned All-American honors from The Sporting News, the NABC, USA Today, CBS Sports and the Associated Press.
Williams decided to forego an opportunity to return for his senior year and committed to play with the Suns entry. He averaged 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds and led the team with 39 steals in helping IU to a No. 9 ranking in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament and an outright Big Ten Championship this past season. He became the eighth player recruited by Tom Crean at Indiana to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in his career and is 40th among all-time Hoosiers with 1,115 points.
After being selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by Charlotte, Vonleh has averaged 3.6 points in his 103-game NBA career. He was traded to Portland prior to the 2015-16 season and started 56 games for the Blazers. He also has averaged 3.8 rebounds in his career. He is the youngest of the three former Hoosiers and will not turn 21 until this August.
Jones III scored 1,347 points over his four-year career at IU (2009-12), which ranks 25th on the all-time scoring list at Indiana. After playing overseas initially, Jones III returned to the United States and played for the Santa Cruz Warriors, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, during the 2015-16 season. At Santa Cruz, he played in all 50 games and averaged 16.1 points, 3.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 31 minutes per game.
