Stage Set for Singles Semifinals
With the conclusion of the third day of tournament play on Sunday evening, only eight players remain in championship contention. Both brackets will resume with their semifinals and finals rounds on Tueday, August 16.
Still standing in the men's bracket are two semifinalists from the tournament host, Indiana University. Second-seeded Raheel Manji and top-16 Antonio Cembellin, doubles partners playing on opposite sides of the bracket, will hope to start their day with a win to secure a meeting in Tuesday's championship final.
Manji reached the semis with a 6-3, 6-4 win against top-16 T.J. Pura (Duke). To reach the championship match, he'll have to knock off Kareem Allaf (Iowa), the only unseeded player remaining in either singles tournament. Allaf reached the penultimate round with a comeback 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 victory over top-16 Julian Childers (Illinois).
Cembellin upended fourth-seeded Connor Curry (Texas Tech), 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, to push into the semifinal round. Awaiting Cembellin is another top-16, Ben Goldberg (UCLA), who is coming off of an impressive 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over Jonas Zacho Larsen (Iowa).
Like the Hoosiers in the men's singles tournament, Texas Tech will field two players in the women's semifinal rounds. Sixth-seed Felicity Maltby and top-16 Alexandra Valenstein will compete for opposite slots in the championship match.
Maltby battled for a 6-2, 6-2 win versus fourth-seed Gabrielle Smith (USC), and she will face the tournament's top overall seed, Josie Kuhlman (Florida). Kuhlman, who has played resiliently in this tournament, enters the semifinals following a 6-4, 6-3 win over eighth-seed Anastasia Rychagova (Kansas).
Valenstein won two close sets, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), over top-16 Janet Koch (Kansas) to secure her semifinal slot, but she'll face her toughest test yet in second-seed Rasheeda McAdoo (Georgia Tech). McAdoo battled back for a 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 victory against top-16 Maci Epstein (Miami) to move one match away from the championship final.
Northwestern Clinches Doubles Title; Men's Final Tomorrow
The women's doubles tournament commenced and concluded on Monday at the UIndy Tennis Center. The fourth-seeded Northwestern tandem of Madeline Lipp and Alexandria Chatt emerged victorious, 8-1, over N.C. State's pairing of Bianca Moldovan and Claudia Wiktorin.
The men's doubles final will conclude on Tuesday evening. Top-seeded Catalin Mateas and Vincent Lin (Duke) will take on the Indiana Hoosier duo of Raheel Manji and Antonio Cembellin, who are seeded second.
