RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University redshirt junior diver Michael Hixon placed 10th overall in the 3m springboard at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics on Tuesday.
Hixon finished 10th overall with a score of 431.65 points, with two of his dives totaling over 80 points – 85.75 and 81.60. In the morning prelims, Hixon qualified fourth overall for the final with a score of 467.25. Hixon was tremendous in the semifinals, scoring five of his six dives over 78 points, including marks of 91.20, 84.00 and 81.60.
"Mike had a great first Olympic experience," IU head diving coach and Team USA head diving coach Drew Johansen remarked. "A silver medal and and Olympic final is fantastic. Although he missed a few dives tonight, he has established himself as a premier diver on the Olympic stage. This is the result of only two years working together, so I can't wait to see what the next four will bring."
Last week, Hixon won a silver medal with partner Sam Dorman in the 3m synchronized dive, becoming the first IU diver to medal in an Olympic Games since Mark Lenzi won bronze in the 3m springboard in 1996.
