Indiana men sweep singles, doubles titles; Valenstein wins women's singles
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) concluded the weekend's ITA Summer Nationals tournaments on Tuesday afternoon at the Indiana University Tennis Center. Tuesday's action decided the tournament champions for the men's and women's singles tournaments, along with the men's doubles tournament.
Indiana Claims Men's Singles, Doubles Titles
Something incredibly unique occurred at this weekend's ITA Summer Nationals. In both the men's and women's singles championship matches, two pairs of collegiate teammates met in their battles for first place.
For tournament host Indiana, the men's singles final pitted second-seed Raheel Manji and Antonio Cembellin, who entered in the top 16. Manji began his day with a semifinal win, 6-2, 7-6 (2), over Iowa's Kareem Allaf. Cembellin, in the top half of the bracket, knocked off Ben Goldberg (UCLA) in a top-16 battle, 6-2, 6-1.
Cembellin took the first set over his Indiana teammate, 7-5, but Manji evened the score with a 4-6 set win to force a decisive tiebreaker. Cembellin secured the tiebreaker point, 1-0 (4), to take the tournament crown.
Manji and Cembellin quickly pushed their singles match aside to make way for the men's doubles final. The pair began the duals tournament on Monday as the second seed, and reached the final match versus top-seeded Vincent Lin and Catalin Mateas (Duke). Manji ans Cembellin continued their momentum with an 8-0 win to seal the doubles title.
Valenstein Hoists Singles Title; Northwestern Clinches Doubles
The ITA Summer Nationals women's singles championship concluded with another teammate-versus-teammate battle, this time between Texas Tech's Felicity Maltby and Alexandra Valenstein.
Top-16 seed Valenstein upset second-seeded Rasheeda McAdoo (Georgia Tech), 7-6 (1), 7-5, to earn a finals berth. On the top half of the women's bracket, tournament favorite Josie Kuhlman (Florida) fell to Maltby, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (7).
Maltby took an early lead after winning the first set, 6-2. Valenstein squared the score with another 6-2 set decision, forcing a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker point came down to the wire, and Valenstein pulled out the decisive point, 1-0 (9).
The women's doubles final, which concluded on Monday evening, featured the Northwestern tandem of Madeline Lipp and Alexandra Chatt versus N.C. State's duo of Bianca Moldovin and Claudia Wiktorin. Lipp and Chatt won the match, 8-1, to earn the doubles championship for Northwestern.
