
Field Hockey Wins Scrimmage Over Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team played their final scrimmage of the 2016 preseason on Saturday afternoon versus Ball State at the Briner Sports Complex. The Hoosiers swept the Cardinals with a 5-0 win in regulation, a 1-0 overtime win, and a 2-1 victory in the shootout scenario.
As a team, the Hoosiers tallied 19 shots, 16 of which made it on target. Indiana also won the penalty corner battle, taking 10 attack penalty corners while defending two from Ball State.
Maddie Latino put the Hoosiers on the scoreboard within the first three minutes of play. Latino, Indiana's leading scorer in 2015, tipped Kate Barber's penalty corner hit to give Indiana the 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers doubled their first half lead with Pearson's first goal of the game, six minutes after Latino's opening strike. Mollie Getzfread made the connection from the midfield, and Pearson finished her chance from the top left side of the circle.
Pearson notched her second score early in the second half on an attack penalty corner to give Indiana 3-0 lead. A minute and a half later, Pearson completed her hat trick by finishing Barber's long ball from midfield with a diving reverse tip into the goal.
Sam Scire sealed the 5-0 win with a goal in the final minute of regulation. Barber delivered a backdoor pass to the right side to Latino, and Latino sent her pass across the circle for Scire's trap shot score.
Following the regulation periods, the teams agreed to play overtime and shootout scenarios. Indiana clinched the overtime period in the first minute of action, when Pearson beat her mark on her way through the middle of the turf. Pearson placed her reverse shot to the left of the keeper to take the sudden victory for Indiana.
The Hoosiers triumphed in the shootout as well, winning 2-1. Pearson and Latino scored on their shootout attempts to complete Indiana's sweep.
The goalkeeping duo of Noëlle Rother and Katie Johnson split time between the pipes in Saturday's scrimmage. Due to outstanding defensive play in the field, Rother and Johnson were called to make one save apiece on their way to a shutout win.

Indiana will open their 2016 campaign next weekend at home against their out-of-conference rivals, the Louisville Cardinals. The Hoosiers and Cardinals met at the beginning of the 2015 season in Louisville, where the Cardinals emerged with a 3-0 victory.
This game marks the first time since the 2011 season that Indiana is beginning their regular season on their home turf. The Hoosiers' game against Louisville will be their first of four out-of-conference meetings against the ACC.
