FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 13-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team brought its exhibition season to a close on Saturday night at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind., beating the No. 6-ranked UCLA Bruins, 2-0.
Sophomore Rees Wedderburn and junior Rashad Hyacenth score goals for the Hoosiers, while Fort Wayne native Spencer Glass tallied an assist. IU goalkeeper Colin Webb made four saves in the shutout.
After a scoreless first half, Wedderburn got the Hoosiers on the scoreboard and a lead in the 52nd minute. After his first shot was saved by a jumping UCLA goalie, the rebound fell right back to Wedderburn, who buried a goal from eight yards out with his left foot, splitting a pair of UCAL defenders on the line.
In the 81st minute, Glass played a long pass up the left side of the pitch, finding Hyacenth alone with a defender. The Belmont transfer was able to get a toe to the ball, beating a charging UCLA keeper from the top of the 18-yard box, pushing IU's lead to 2-0 over the Bruins.
The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers will open the 2016 season at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind. against New Mexico on Friday, Aug. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
