BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference announced its 2016 field hockey preseason honors on Monday, highlighted by nine All-Big Ten selections from last season. Among the list of honorees were three Hoosiers: senior Kate Barber, senior Morgan Dye, and sophomore Noëlle Rother.
Barber was one of three players on the preseason list who received All-Big Ten first team honors in 2015. Named to last year's NFHCA All-American third team, Barber scored eight goals with seven assists in her junior season. The two-time Indiana team captain dominated as a hitter on the Hoosiers' attack penalty corners, scoring and creating 11 total goals from that scenario.
Dye has earned a reputation for being one of the conference's fastest players on the turf. The senior started all 19 games for Indiana during their record-breaking run through the Big Ten in 2015, contributing with two goals and one assist. Dye is one of three players on the preseason list named a Big Ten Scholar of Distinction, and during the 2015-16 academic year received the Jack D. Tichenor award for the highest grade-point average in the IU Athletic Department.
Rother returns from a breakout freshman season in 2015, when she was a three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week and an All-Big Ten second team honoree. Rother's 114 saves ranks third in Indiana's single-season records, and her .770 save percentage ranked 10th nationally last season. In the Hoosiers' final four Big Ten games of the regular season, Rother and the IU defense yielded just one goal, in a 1-0 overtime loss at Maryland. Rother totaled 16 saves in the game versus Terrapins, tying the second-highest single-game total in program history.
The Hoosiers begin the 2016 season on Friday, August 26 versus the Louisville Cardinals. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET at the IU Field Hockey Complex and will air live on BTN Plus.
