BLOOMINGTON – The Indiana University Athletics Excellence Academy welcomed back student-athletes to campus for the 2016 fall semester with a number of events leading up to the start of classes. Welcome Week included the inaugural IU Athletics Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll event, the Hoosier HEROES Mentor/Mentee Mixer, the Freshman Excellence Academy Induction and the Welcome Back Splash
Approximately 300 student-athletes participated in the first ever IU Athletics Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll event on August 17. The event is a spinoff of the campus version of the same name but is geared toward the IU student-athlete and everything that encompasses being a part of Indiana Athletics. The evening focused on getting student-athletes exposed to and educated on safe, healthy and fun choices during their college careers. It also made students aware of resources available to them during their time at Indiana.
Those in attendance took part in a number of hands-on activities such as driving golf carts while wearing fatal vision goggles with the Indiana State Police; engaging in activities to learn about consent, various student groups available to them and how simple decisions could help to keep them be safe and healthy; compete in strong person and athletic training competitions with the athletics strength & conditioning and training staffs; and attend "bartending school" with Counseling and Psychological Services, as well as get a sneak peak at the Cuban Center's virtual reality offerings.
On August 19, the Hoosier HEROES Mentor/Mentee Mixer took place in the Henke Hall of Champions. This event allowed incoming freshmen to meet and get to know their Hoosier HEROES student-athlete peer mentors. The Hoosier HEROES program matches student-athlete upperclassmen with freshmen to aid in the transition to the Division I level from high school. Mentors serve as role models and guides for everything from moving in and learning the transportation system to helping with time management, expectations, homesickness, healthy lifestyle choices and beyond.
The Freshmen Excellence Academy Induction took place on August 21 inside the Henke Hall of Champions. IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass, faculty athletics representative Kurt Zorn and all Indiana head coaches introduced themselves and their freshmen team members to all freshmen student-athletes in attendance. The class of 2020 also sang the IU fight song for the first time as a class with the football team.
The Welcome Week festivities were capped off by the annual Welcome Back Splash at the IU Outdoor Pool on August 21. In a relaxed atmosphere with a cookout-themed meal, a live DJ and all sorts of water games, it was a great opportunity for students and coaches to unwind from moving back and get prepared for the start of classes the next day.
