BLOOMINGTON – Fourteen games inside newly renovated Assembly Hall and a total of nine opponents made postseasons appearances last season are just some of the highlights of the 2016-17 Indiana Women's Basketball schedule, released on Monday.
"We're looking forward to our non-conference schedule once again," Reigning Big Ten Coach of the Year Teri Moren said. "We feel there is a good balance in and away from Assembly Hall. The strength of the non-conference schedule will prepare us for the always difficult Big Ten schedule. The month of February will be an incredible challenge for our team, but one we'll embrace and look forward to."
IU will take part in its lone exhibition contest on Nov. 6 when it welcomes UIndy, a familiar foe for Moren who spent seven seasons at the helm of the Greyhounds (2000-07).
The regular season officially kicks off with back-to-back home games with Presbyterian (Nov. 11) and Vanderbilt (Nov. 13) visit Bloomington. The Hoosiers hit the road for the first time when it makes a weekend trip to Southern Conference power Chattanooga (Nov. 17) and Western Kentucky (Nov. 19). The Mocs are coming off their fourth-straight SoCon title and NCAA Tournament appearance last season while the Hilltoppers advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals a season ago.
Thanksgiving week action kicks off on Nov. 23 when IU welcomes UMass Lowell before a trip to Southeastern Conference Auburn follows on Nov. 27. Auburn highlights one of three non-conference foes that made NCAA Tournament appearances (Chattanooga, Auburn and Florida). Previously released, Indiana will travel to North Carolina State to open December in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 1.
A trip to Denton, Texas awaits on Dec. 6 versus North Texas. The team returns home for its longest non-conference homestand with Northern Kentucky (Dec. 8), Valparaiso (Dec. 11) and Oakland (Dec. 17). Returning to the Florida Sunshine Classic for the second-straight season, Indiana will face Florida on Dec. 20 and Stony Brook on Dec. 21 to wrap up non-conference action.
The Hoosiers, who finished fourth in the Big Ten last season with a 12-6 record, will face a total of nine NCAA Tournament teams in 2016-17 once league play officially kicks off on December 28 at Penn State while the Big Ten home opener is set for New Year's Eve versus Ohio State. The Big Ten returns to a 16-game league schedule for the 2016-17 season after playing an 18-game schedule the previous two years.
The Hoosiers will play Penn State, Michigan, Northwestern in home-and-away series while also host Minnesota, Purdue, Maryland and Iowa. Big Ten road trips include Wisconsin, Michigan State, Rutgers, Nebraska and Illinois. The Big Ten Tournament will be held March 1-5, 2017 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the 20th time in league history.
Times for all conference games and television designations for all games will be announced at a later date.
Indiana returns 10 letterwinners from the 2015-16 campaign when it advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Highlighting the roster are junior All-Big Ten selections Tyra Buss (18.8 ppg., 4.3 apg., 2.1 spg.) and Amanda Cahill (14.7 ppg.) along with third leading scorer senior guard Alexis Gassion (11.3 ppg., 3.3 apg.). Five newcomers will also be added to the mix including three freshmen along with transfers Amber Deane and Tia Elbert. Reigning Big Ten Coach of the Year Teri Moren returns for her third season at the helm of the program.
