Hoosiers Post Strong Performances at U.S. Open

MINNEAPOLIS – Members of the Indiana University men's and women's swimming teams have posted strong swims in the first two days of the 2016 U.S. Open Swimming Championships in Minneapolis.
Through the first two days of competition, the IU men lead all teams with a score of 87 points, while the Hoosier women sit in sixth place with a total of 51.
The first night of finals got underway on Tuesday, with sophomore Vini Lanza posting the best finish of the evening, placing second in the men's 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.27. Teammate Max Irwin took 12th overall with a mark of 2:02.26.
Rounding out the Hoosier men on Tuesday, Trey Hubbuch placed 10 in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 15:39.53, while Adam Destrampe touched 15th with a mark of 15:52.56.
On the women's side on Tuesday, Stephanie Marchuk took sixth in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:38.36, while Bailey Pressey placed 23rd in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:17.40. In the final event of Tuesday night, the Hoosier women's 4x100 freestyle relay team of Grace Vertigans, Marie Chamberlain, Marchuk and Rachel Matsumura placed seventh with a time of 3:52.53.
On Wednesday, the Hoosier men had a great showing in the men's 200 backstroke, as Bob Glover earned bronze, touching the wall in a time of 2:00.03. Teammate Wilson Beckman placed sixth overall in 2:01.57.
In the men's 400 freestyle, Destrampe placed 16th overall with a mark of 3:59.57, while Irwin touched 18th in a time of 3:57.66. In the men's 200 breaststroke, Cody Taylor took eighth in a time of 2:17.56.
The Hoosier 4x100 relay team of Sam Lorentz, Ian Finnerty, Lanza and Irwin won bronze, touching with a time of 3:23.05.
For the Indiana women on Wednesday, Marchuk continued her strong meet, placing fifth in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:13.75. Matsumura took 20th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:16.36, while Laura Morley placed 21st in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:35.41.
The 2016 U.S. Open will continue on Thursday with finals of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.
