BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The accolades come on the heels of a weekend that saw the Hudson, Ohio native post a pair of shutout victories and collect 14 total saves against Butler and Northern Colorado.
"I think she earned every bit of it," said head coach Amy Berbary. "She had a great weekend for us and kept it together in the back for both games. She came up big for us a couple times in each half and was very confident in what she was doing."
This marks the first time in Indiana program history that the same student-athlete was selected outright for two weekly awards and the first time for the Big Ten since Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy earned Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week honors in October 2014.
L'Hommedieu posted eight saves against Butler on Friday, including seven in the second half alone. In Indiana's 3-0 win against Northern Colorado on Sunday, she registered six saves.
"One of the things that we've been talking about in training is just being consistent," said assistant and goalkeepers coach Sergio Gonzalez. "She gave us the opportunity to be in the games by making the saves she needed to make, putting herself in the right position and being that cool, calming influence in back and hopefully we can continue to build on that."
IU last received a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week nod Sept. 1, 2015 with goalkeeper Sarah Stone. The last Freshman of the Week award came with current junior Kayla Smith on Nov. 3, 2014.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday as they play host to LSU as part of the Hoosier Challenge Cup. First kick is set for 3 p.m.
