Wes Rogers, Offensive Line
Q: How do you feel in your fifth fall camp?
Rogers: Honestly, I'm just trying to prepare myself for the season. I'm getting some extra running and improving my flexibility and mobility. I think it's going to pay off in the long run, especially when the season comes around.
You were in full pads today. What has the atmosphere felt like this first week of camp?
Rogers: It's been really fun and intense. Nobody has 'camp legs' yet, so we're all running around. We're having fun hitting each other and talking smack to each other, so it's been fun in these first five practices.
How do you approach this season as one of the team leaders?
Rogers: I'm just trying to make sure the younger guys know what the standard is. That includes how our offense and offensive line plays, how they work, practice, play, lift, and go to meetings. We're really just trying to set the example for the younger guys and make sure they know what they're supposed to be doing.
What is your focus for the season once the schedule is underway?
Rogers: We want to win games, that's our main goal. We want to be intense at practice and get what we need out of those times. We want to be as prepared as we can be for every opponent we face.
Jacob Bailey, Offensive Line
Q: What has the atmosphere been like?
Bailey: It's been really fun. Being here for my fifth year, as the older guy, you realize as time goes on that football is fun. Some of the younger guys are out here thinking that it's work, but there's nothing I'd rather be doing right now.
Q: A lot of experience on the line this year, how does that help you?
Bailey: It gives us a lot of options. We have a lot of experience, yes, but we lost Jason Spriggs and Jake Reed after last year. So right now, we're trying to figure out who is in our best five. And Coach Frey won't play favorites—if we have five fifth-year seniors, but the freshmen are playing better, he'll play the freshmen. Right now it's about figuring out our best five and getting them on the field.
Q: What are other focuses for the line?
Bailey: Right now, we need to get back into football shape. It's nice to be strong in the weight room, but now we need to get ready, get conditioned to be ready to play at the tempo of our offense. We want to get back into hitting condition and back into football shape.
Greg Frey, Offensive Line Coach
Q: How has the first week been with the line?
Frey: Right now we're trying to get back into shape, get a little stronger and build off of where we were in the spring while correcting some of the issues from the summer. We're getting them right, just trying to get them working as a team and the offensive line.
Q: How can you build on the success from last season, a lot of which was due to the offensive line?
Frey: Well that was last year's team. They did a great job, but now we have this year's team. The bottom line is that Jason Spriggs and Jake Reed were seniors, so they built the line into what they wanted it to be. This year we have Dan Feeney, Jacob Bailey, Wes Rogers and Dimitric Camiel, so they'll build this offensive line. In 12 games, you'll be able to see what these seniors have been able to build with this offensive line.
Q: How have those senior veterans stepped up in the first week of camp?
Frey: When the coaches are around, we don't need them to necessarily be leaders. We just need them to focus on being great players and being themselves. When they're off the field, encouraging their teammates and including them in the group, that's where their leadership is. I don't get to see that all the time, but when I'm in the huddle I need them to be great teammates and great players.
