BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team opened their 42nd season in program history on Tuesday morning with their first practice.
Already having been on campus the day before to go through meetings, get new gear and take pictures, the team was upbeat and filled with energy and excitement to get the season underway.
"This is what everyone looks forward to," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "I think this is what we live for, to be back in the gym. The team has been working hard all summer even though we as coaches haven't been able to work with them. I like the accountability and I like being back in the gym working to get better."
In 17 days the Hoosiers will open the season by hosting the Indiana Invitational with the first match set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday August 26 at University Gym.
Although they are anxious to start playing matches they know there is a lot of work to do in the next 17 days to put themselves in position to have a successful season.
"Our goals are to learn a lot," senior captain Megan Tallman said, following the first practice. "It's learning how we can work well together and learning how fast our offense can go and pushing that everyday. I'm looking for positive energy and a positive attitude from the team. When we have that and we have a good work ethic this team can get a lot of things done that people don't believe we can."
The Hoosiers are coming off a 16-16 season, their best record since the 2010 season, that saw them reach the Sweet 16.
The 2016 Hoosiers feature a strong group of five seniors mixed with six newcomers, who are eager to put in the work necessary to succeed at the collegiate level in the Big Ten.
"We have a passion for the game of volleyball and the freshmen have that too," senior captain Taylor Lebo said. "We have this passion that we love volleyball and are committed to coming together and working hard as a team."
